Literature-Based Art Curriculum is versatile. A template can be created from any book. Once your book is chosen, put your copier to good use or your drawing skills! Pick the illustrations you want to use in your art project and adjust the copier settings to make the image the desired size. Once you have your image copied, trace the outline with a permanent marker. Place a white sheet of paper over the outlined image and retrace it adding image details. This is your template. If the students cut out their own copy, thicken the outline of the template. This will help the students cut with accuracy. Allow the students to cut at their own pace. Imperfect cut outs are expected and add to the uniqueness of the project.
Day 1: Create the background. Color templates to be cut out on Day 2.
Day 2: Cut out images. Using the illustrations as a guideline, have the students glue the cut outs onto the background. Glue on wiggly eyes, glitter, die cuts etc. Let dry.
Day 3: Have students draw on their final artwork using oil pastels or crayons without limitations.
